CHECK AND CLEAN FILTER IN EGR VACUUM\nMODULATOR\n(a) Remove the cap and filter.\n(b) Check the filter for contamination or damage.\n(c) Using compressed air, clean the filter.\n(d) Reinstall the filter and cap.\nHINT: Install the filter with the coarser surface facing the at-\nmospheric side outward.\n\n2. INSTALL VACUUM GAUGE\nUsing a 3–way connector, connect a vacuum gauge to the\nhose between the EGR valve and EGR vacuum modulator.\n\n3. INSPECT SEATING OF EGR VALVE\nCheck that the engine starts and runs at idle.\n\n4. INSPECT VSV OPERATION WITH COLD ENGINE\n(a) The engine coolant temperature should be below 45°C\n(113°F).\n(b) Check that the vacuum gauge indicates zero at 2,500 rpm.\n(c) Check that the EGR pipe is not hot.\n\n5. INSPECT OPERATION OF VSV AND EGR VACUUM\nMODULATOR WITH HOT ENGINE\n(a) Warm up the engine to above 50°C (122°F).\n(b) Check that the vacuum gauge indicates low vacuum at 3,500\nrpm.\n(c) Disconnect the vacuum hose from port R of the EGR vacuum\nmodulator and connect port R directly to the air intake\nchamber with another hose.\n(d) Check that the vacuum gauge indicates high vacuum at\n3,500 rpm.\nHINT: As exhaust gas is increasingly recirculated, the engine\nwill start to misfire.\n\n6.
