{"model":"mk4","model_name":"MK4 Supra","vehicle":"Toyota Supra A80 (1993–2002, 2JZ-GE / 2JZ-GTE)","document":"Repair Manual","section":"TGE","section_name":"Troubleshooting 2JZ-GE","page":4,"pages_in_section":105,"title":"Diagnosis System Description","section_header":"Engine — 2JZ-GE Engine Troubleshooting","ocr_text":"EG–384\n\nENGINE – 2JZ–GE ENGINE TROUBLESHOOTING\n\nDIAGNOSIS SYSTEM\nDESCRIPTION\n\nCHECK\n\nFIG834\n\nThe ECM contains a built–in self–diagnosis system by which\ntroubles with the engine signal network are detected and a Mal-\nfunction Indicator Lamp on the instrument panel lights up.\nBy analyzing various signals as shown in a later table (See page\nEG–388) the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects system mal-\nfunctions relating to the sensors or actuators.\nIn the normal mode, the self–diagnosis system monitors 18\n(California specification vehicles) or 17 (except for California and\nCanadian specification) items, indicated by code No. as shown in\nEG–388. A malfunction indicator lamp informs the driver that a\nmalfunction has been detected. The lamp goes off automatically\nwhen the malfunction has been repaired, but the diagnostic\ntrouble code(s) remains stored in the ECM memory (except for\ncode Nos. 16 and 53). The ECM stores the code(s) until it is\ncleared by removing the EFI No. 1 fuse with the ignition switch\nOFF.\nThe diagnostic trouble code can be read by the number of blinks\nof the malfunction indicator lamp when TE1 and E1 terminals on\nthe data link connector 1 or 2 are connected. When 2 or more\ncodes are indicated, the lowest number (code) will appear first.\nIn the test mode, 12 (California specification vehicles) or 11 (ex-\ncept for California and Canadian specification vehicles) items, in-\ndicated by code No. as shown in EG–388 are monitored. If a mal-\nfunction is detected in any one of the systems indicated by code\nNos. 13, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 35, 41, 71 and 78 (California\nspecification vehicles) or 13, 21, 22, 24, 25, 28, 35, 41, 71 and 78\n(except for California and Canadian specification vehicles) the\nECM lights the malfunction indicator lamp to warn the technician\nthat a malfunction has been detected. In this case, TE2 and E1\nterminals on the data link connector 2 should be connected as\nshown later. (See page EG–386).\nIn the test mode, even if the malfunction is corrected, the malfunc-\ntion code is stored in the ECM memory even when the ignition\nswitch OFF (except code Nos. 43 and 51). This also applies in the\nnormal mode. The diagnostic trouble mode (normal or test) and\nthe output of the malfunction indicator lamp can be selected by\nconnecting the TE1, TE2 and E1 terminals on the data link con-\nnector 2, as shown later.\nA test mode function has been added to the functions of the self–\ndiagnosis system of the normal mode for the purpose of detecting\nmalfunctions such as poor contact, which are difficult to detect in\nthe normal mode. This function fills up the self–diagnosis system.\nThe test mode can be implemented by the technician following the\nappropriate procedures of check terminal connection and opera-\ntion described later.
