Loss of Power and Stalling - Cracked Plastic Intercooler Pipe at Fender

TurbointermediateCommunity Verified
Problem

While cruising, the engine suddenly started cutting out, losing power, and eventually stalled. After restart, the car idled low, had significant power loss, and was not making boost. CEL codes 34 and 43 were stored. After giving it gas, the engine would nearly stall as RPMs came back down.

Root Cause

The plastic intercooler pipe that exits the front right fender (between the fender and the 3000 pipe on the cold side of the intercooler plumbing) had cracked and split along its seams, causing a massive boost leak. These 30+ year old plastic pieces become brittle with age and are prone to cracking.
