7MGTE CPS Intermittent No-Start and Stumbling - Wiring Rebuild

ElectricalintermediateCommunity Verified
Problem

The Cam Position Sensor (CPS) on the 7MGTE develops brittle, heat-damaged wiring after 30+ years of heat cycles, causing intermittent starting failures and running issues.

Engine will not restart when hot (heat soaked)Engine starts only when CPS wires are jiggledRandom check engine light flashes while drivingEngine stumbling at idle and while driving when hotEngine momentarily dies then comes back to lifeIntermittent no-start regardless of engine temperature (worsens over time)Brittle and visibly damaged CPS wiring
Root Cause

The CPS internal wiring and connector leads degrade from decades of engine heat exposure, becoming extremely brittle and developing intermittent connections. The internal sensors still function but the wiring fails to reliably carry the signal.
