Power Steering High Pressure Line Removal - Banjo Bolt and Pressure Port

SuspensionintermediateCommunity Verified
Problem

Unable to remove the power steering high pressure line banjo bolt from the pump. A 17mm socket felt loose on the fitting and a 16mm would not fit, causing concern about stripping the bolt.

17mm socket feels loose on power steering pump banjo bolt16mm socket will not fit the banjo boltBanjo bolt will not break free despite correct socket sizePressure port spins together with the banjo bolt when trying to loosen
Root Cause

The power steering pump high pressure fitting is actually two separate parts: a 17mm banjo bolt AND a 27mm pressure port that the banjo bolt threads into. The pressure port is threaded into the pump housing separately. When trying to remove the banjo bolt, the pressure port can spin along with it, preventing removal and making the 17mm socket feel loose or ineffective. Electrolysis between the copper washers and the pipe can also create a bond making removal difficult.
