Power Steering Leak - High Pressure Line Rubber Section Failure

SuspensionintermediateCommunity Verified
Problem

Power steering fluid leaking from under the engine bay, difficult to pinpoint exact source. On 30+ year old MK3 Supras, the original high pressure power steering line develops pinholes and cracks where the metal transitions to rubber at the crimp fittings near the steering rack.

Root Cause

The original OEM high pressure power steering line fails after 30+ years. The rubber section at the crimp fitting where it transitions from metal to hose develops pinholes and cracks. A protective sleeve over the rubber section (due to proximity to the intercooler pipe) can hide the damage. The banjo bolt copper crush washers can also leak and mimic a crimp fitting leak. In some cases the pump shaft seal also fails, requiring pump replacement as well.
