Old window tint on the rear hatch glass has degraded, turned purple/opaque, and is extremely difficult to remove without damaging the embedded defroster grid wires. Previous attempts with a heat gun caused the tint to curl and disintegrate rather than peel cleanly.
Factory or aftermarket window tint adhesive hardens and bonds more aggressively to glass over 20-30 years of UV exposure and heat cycling. The adhesive becomes brittle and dry rather than tacky, making chemical solvents largely ineffective since they cannot penetrate the solid polyester tint film to reach the adhesive layer. Heat is the key factor that softens the aged adhesive enough to allow clean removal.
