Lamp Failure Sensor Bypass for LED Bulb Conversion

ElectricalintermediateCommunity Verified
Problem

The MKIII Supra's lamp failure sensor module (a plastic box behind the driver-side tail lamp trim) is calibrated for incandescent bulb current draw. When switching to LED bulbs, the lower current causes the sensor to falsely detect bulb failures, triggering the dash 'LIGHTS' warning lamp and causing erratic lighting behavior.

Root Cause

The lamp failure sensor module uses sense resistors calibrated for the higher current draw of incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs draw significantly less current, causing the sensor to interpret the low current as a failed bulb. The module then disrupts the lighting circuits, causing the dash warning and sometimes cutting power to lights.
