Rear Wheel Play and Humming Diagnosed as Spherical Bushing, Not Wheel Bearing

SuspensionintermediateCommunity Verified
Problem

Rear wheel exhibits play and clicking or dull clunking sounds when rocked by hand, along with a low humming sound at speeds above 20mph. Symptoms closely mimic a worn wheel bearing but are actually caused by a worn spherical (ball) bushing in the rear knuckle.

Root Cause

The spherical bushing (Toyota part #42210-14010) in the rear knuckle is worn, allowing clearance and play in the inner sleeve. The bushing is designed to flex rotationally but should have zero clearance/slop. This worn bushing produces symptoms nearly identical to a failed wheel bearing, leading to misdiagnosis.
