Sourcing 7MGTE Valve Shims - OEM Part Numbers and Alternatives

EngineintermediateOP Confirmed
Problem

After having a machine shop sand smooth the cam lobes on a 7MGTE during reconditioning, valve lash measurements were significantly altered, requiring approximately 10 new valve shims of specific sizes in 5-thousandths-of-an-inch increments. OEM Toyota shims were difficult to find in the exact sizes needed and were expensive.

Root Cause

The machine shop sanded the cam lobes smooth to remove minor scoring from age. This removed material from the cam lobes, changing the valve lash across many valves and requiring a large number of replacement shims in varying sizes. The cam lobe scoring was minor and did not actually need to be addressed, making the machining unnecessary.
