Spongy Brakes for Years - Rear Calipers Installed on Wrong Sides

BrakesbeginnerOP Confirmed
Problem

Persistent spongy, ineffective brakes despite replacing the master cylinder, swapping the ABS unit, cleaning the proportioning valve, and repeated brake bleeding sessions over the course of 8+ years.

Spongy or soft brake pedalBrakes never felt properly bled despite extensive bleeding attemptsProblem persisted through multiple master cylinder replacementsProblem persisted through ABS unit replacementProblem persisted through proportioning valve cleaning
Root Cause

The rear brake calipers were installed on the wrong sides (left on right, right on left), causing the bleeder screws to face downward instead of upward. With the bleeders facing down, trapped air could never be purged from the calipers no matter how many times the system was bled.
