Valve Cover Gasket Leaking - Proper Torque, Sealant, and Hardware Upgrade

EnginebeginnerCommunity Verified
Problem

Valve cover gaskets leaking oil shortly after replacement on 7M engine. Gaskets were replaced but began leaking again within three weeks.

Oil leaking from valve cover gaskets within weeks of replacementVisible oil seepage around valve cover perimeterOily soot buildup around gasket line
Root Cause

Multiple contributing factors: under-torquing the valve cover bolts (owner was afraid to torque to spec), missing RTV sealant at the front cam cover corners as specified by the TSRM, worn/soft bolt grommets, and OEM Phillips head bolts that lose tension over time. Aftermarket gaskets may also seal less reliably than Toyota OEM gaskets.
