SKP Aftermarket Oil Pump Gear Failure - OEM Pump Rebuild Required

EngineadvancedCommunity Verified
Problem

Aftermarket SKP oil pump driven gear failed after approximately 600 miles on a rebuilt 7MGTE engine, causing loss of oil pressure, turbo failure, and bearing damage. The SKP pump runs much tighter tolerances than OEM and does not account for thermal expansion, causing the pump to seize at higher temperatures and loads. The bronze driven gear (a designed failure point) gets eaten away when the pump seizes.

Root Cause

The SKP aftermarket oil pump (and likely other aftermarket 7M oil pumps) has much tighter internal tolerances than the OEM Aisin pump. These tight tolerances do not account for thermal expansion, so at operating temperature and higher loads the pump vanes and walls expand into each other, causing the pump to seize. The bronze driven gear shears as a designed failure point, resulting in complete loss of oil pressure.
