AT-78 A340E(Others) AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - SECOND BRAKE SST AT8438 3. REMOVE PISTON RETURN SPRING (a) Place SST on the spring retainer, and compress the return spring with a shop press. SST 09350-30020 (09350-07040) (b) Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring. (c) Remove the spring retainer. AT8185 (d) Remove the piston return spring. AT8196 4. REMOVE SECOND BRAKE PISTON (a) Hold the second brake piston with hand, apply compressed air to the second brake drum to remove the second brake piston. (b) Remove the second brake piston. HINT: If the piston is at an angle and cannot be removed, press down on the side jutting out and again apply compressed air, or else wind vinyl tape around the piston end and remove it with needle-nose pliers. (c) Remove the 2 O-rings from the piston. AT061-06 SECOND BRAKE INSPECTION INSPECT DISC, PLATE AND FLANGE Check to see if the sliding surface of the disc, plate and flange are worn or burnt. If necessary, replace them. HINT: ★ If the lining of the disc is peeling off or discolored, or even if a part of the printed numbers are defaced, replace all discs. ★ Before assembling new discs, soak them in ATF for at least 15 minutes.
